Abstract

This introductory article provides an overview over the development of the bioeconomy debate in Germany, introduces key terms and definitions, and discusses the specifics of bioeconomy policy from a political science perspective. The development of the bioeconomy concept is outlined using definitions from key sources. Important basic terms such as biomass, biotechnology and biorefineries are presented on the basis of text excerpts, as are concepts that are discussed as possible contributions to a more sustainable economy, such as coupled and cascade use or circular economy. Finally, the article briefly summarizes reflections on the relationship between bioeconomy and sustainability as well as the state of political science research on the bioeconomy. The text is based on work carried out in the context of the project Bio-Ökopoli.
