Housing policy is part of social policy. In this interpretation, housing policies shall prevent acute housing shortages, but also provide adequate housing “for all”. Besides this obvious social dimension of housing, this working paper explicitly integrates an ecological dimension: when it comes to scare resources, high land consumption, and efficiency matters, the relationship between new construction and refurbishment has to be adressed. The articles in this working paper deal with the topics of housing and sustainability from different perspectives. Researchers at different stages of their academic careers report on their experiences in research projects and present basic terms, practical examples, research results and open questions about “sustainable housing policies”. The special issue thereby provides an insight into the current (political) sciences debate on housing and sustainability and provides impetus for further discussion of this topic.
