Bioeconomy aims to shift the raw material base from fossil to biogenic raw materials and to enable a sustainable economic system through efficient resource use and circular economy. But how sustainable is bioeconomy? The contributions in this issue deal with the topics of bioeconomy and sustainability from various perspectives. Researchers and students report on their experiences in research projects and university courses. In their contributions, they deal with bioeconomy and its sub-areas, with basic concepts and practical examples, with research results and open questions in this relatively new field. This issue provides insights into the current (political) scientific debate on bioeconomy and sustainability, and gives impulses for further discussion of this topic.
